Winter Break

Students return to school on Wednesday, January 4th.

Middle School Eagle Fans

Coach Johnson loaded his middle school boys and off they went to the Colonial Life Arena to watch the USC Men's Basketball team play a special Division II school, Lander University.  This was obviously an uneven matchup but Coach Johnson capitalized on the opportunity to take his boys to watch his alma mater, the Bearcats of Lander.  If the second half could tell the entire story of the uneven matchup, Lander outscored the Gamecocks 46-27.  However, the final score is obviously the determining factor, and the Gamecocks captured the win 90-62.

Fun trivia, how many RW faculty members are Lander alumni?  Can you name them all?

The varsity Eagle teams closed out the first half of their 2016-2017 season with victories in the Holiday Hoops Tournament.

Even though RWA's VG lost to Calhoun in Monday's match up, they had little trouble in wrapping up a 46-28 victory over South Aiken on Tuesday. Senior Alyssa Atkerson led the Lady Eagles against South Aiken with 13 points, followed by Calee Thigpen with 12, and Meredith Pope notched 10.

A Wee, Little Christmas

It is absolutely the most rewarding moment to sit and watch one of Mrs. Nic's music productions.  This morning, family, friends, and students gathered together as the Pre-K through first grade awed the crowd with their recitations, songs, and choreography.  The pictures included will only give you a small flavor of this joyful experience.  The students did a fantastic job re-enacting the Christmas story and followed the beautiful story of Jesus' birth with some cute and festive melodies.

The Missing Man Table Ceremony

Presented by
Senior Master Sergeant (SMSgt) David L. Hutter
Master Sergeant (MSgt) Ashley B. Wilson (Class of 1988)
Senior Airman (SRA) Christopher J. Wrigley

Richard Winn students in grades 4-12 had the privilege of learning about The Missing Man Table, also known as the Fallen Comrade Table. The following script was provided by Master Sergeant (MSgt) Ashley B. Wilson (Class of 1988). A recommended read is the children’s picture book “America’s White Table.” http://www.margotraven.com/Pages/books4.aspx

The table on display is set for one. The military caste is filled with symbology. This table is our way of symbolizing the fact that members of our profession of arms are missing from our midst. They are commonly called P.O.W.’s and M.I.A.’s. We call them “BROTHERS” and “SISTERS”. They are unable to be with us this evening and so we remember them because of their status.

The table set for one is small, symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against their aggressors. REMEMBER THIS!!

The tablecloth is white, symbolizing the purity of their intentions to respond to their country’s call to arms. REMEMBER THIS!!

REMEMBER, that the single rose displayed in a vase reminds us of the families and loved ones of our comrades-in-arms who keep the faith awaiting their return. (HONOR GUARD places rose)

REMEMBER, that the yellow ribbon tied so prominently to the vase is reminiscent of the yellow ribbon worn on the lapel and breast of those who bear witness to their unyielding determination to demand a proper accounting of our missing.

REMEMBER, this slice of lemon on the bread plate is to remind us of their bitter fate. (HONOR GUARD places lemon)

There is salt upon the bread plate, symbolic of the tears shed awaiting their return. REMEMBER THIS!! (HONOR GUARD places salt)

The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God. REMEMBER THIS!! (HONOR GUARD places Bible)

The glass is inverted—for they cannot toast with us this evening. REMEMBER THIS!! (HONOR GUARD places glass)

The candle is reminiscent of the light of hope, which lives in our hearts to illuminate their way home, away from their captors, to the open arms of a grateful nation.

The chair is empty—for they are still missing.

REMEMBER—all of us who have served and call them comrades, and those that call them family, we depended upon their might and aid, and relied upon them, they have not forsaken us.

Let us pray that all of our comrades will soon be back within our ranks. May God forever watch over them and protect them and their families.

Christmas Is a Feeling

On Thursday, December 8, Mrs. Nicholson, with the assistance of Mrs. Peake and Ms. Breen, orchestrated yet another memorable Christmas musical. Mrs. Nicholson scripted a wonderful program that reflected the school's 50 year history with a "Home for the Holidays theme."

Students in grades 2 through 12 sparked the Christmas spirit in everyone with a variety of traditional religious music and live nativity as well as with performances of many whimsical Christmas songs. Even the audience got in on the fun as they joined in the singing of "The Twelve Days of Christmas." At the conclusion of the event, alumni were invited to come forward for the traditional singing of Natalie Sleeth's "Christmas Is a Feeling."

Seniors Play in North South All Stars

Seniors Parker Amick, Mitchell Gibbons, Christian Christianson, and Tyler Douglas were members of the South squad in the annual SCISA NORTH/SOUTH All Star game. These guys liked the crisp, cool, low country temps on Saturday morning and each contributed to the 26-22 victory.

QB Mitchell Gibbons completed a 51 yard touchdown pass and served as the team's kicker. Tyler Douglas forced a fumble while teammate Parker Amick recovered a fumble and wrapped up several North tackles. Christian Christian was an important lineman and his most memorable highlight was the final play of the game. Christianson's second sack of the game came in the final seconds and secured the victory for the South team.

Congrats seniors!!

Basketball Update

The Eagles claimed three of four victories over the Wardlaw Patriots in Wednesday's home contests. Wardlaw stole the MS boys' game away from the young Eagle team with a buzzer beater three-pointer to claim the 20-17 upset.

Congratulations to the MS girls and both varsity teams for capturing the wins over Wardlaw.

During Monday's varsity contest at Whitmire HS, the Lady Eagles claimed their first win of the season under rookie head coach Jessie Stidham, but the varsity boys went down in defeat at the hands of the Whitmire squad.
