Third Grader's Tour Fairfield County

Mrs. Berry and her third graders traveled around our county today learning about historical places. The students have been studying South Carolina history this school year and were fortunate to have Mrs. Lily Caldwell lead them around to learn more about Fairfield County's rich history.

Some of the stops included the Old Brick Church, the Town Clock, the Court House, and the Cornwallis House.  The students were treated to lunch at the Cornwallis Tea Room followed by ice cream at Abba's Sweet Treats.

Thank you to Mrs. Martha Ladd for escorting the students on the activity bus.

Memorial Garden

The Class of 2016 has planted a memorial garden in front of the high school in memory of Jenni Caldwell Sharpe, '01.  A special dedication service was held yesterday and the student body gathered to witness the dedication.

Pastor James McManus delivered a short message about the beauty of God's creation and the significance of this special place in honor and memory of Jenni.  Pastor James encouraged all to visit the garden and to be as strong in our faith as Jenni.  The analogy of the importance of nurturing plants compared to the nurturing of our faith through the Holy Word, prayer, and worship was very meaningful.  Pastor James prayed that this garden not only be a visual reminder of Jenni and her witness but that each person would stop, think, and pray around this garden to be drawn closer to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Standardized Testing begins Monday (grades 3-8)

On Test Day

Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast

Many teachers report that students who don't do well on tests haven't gotten enough sleep, and haven't eaten breakfast on the morning of the test. Doing both of these things will ensure that your child is working at full capacity (Narang, 2008).

Make sure your child is prepared

Students will need #2 pencils, an eraser, paper, and a calculator (grades 6-8). Check with your child's teacher to if you have questions.

Remain positive

Staying calm will help your child stay calm. If he/she gets nervous about the test or is likely to experience anxiety during the test, help her practice some relaxation techniques that she can try once she's taking the test (Narang, 2008).

My Father's War Presentation

Richard Winn Academy will host the acclaimed World War II presentation “My Father’s War” on Monday, April 11, 2016, at 1:00 PM in the school’s gymnasium.  The drama is based on the memoires of Herschel Ponder, a fighter pilot during that war.  The two-person show is part readers theatre, part song performance, and fully engaging according to the reviews from across the South.   Evans Donnell, of Arts Nashville, calls the show “A searing, unvarnished and very personal account of war . . . [and] the words flow like honey from this presentation.”

There will be one performance only.  Veterans are invited to attend as guests of the school.   At the conclusion of the one hour show there will be a question and answer time with the performers.  They will also be meeting with the school’s drama club after dismissal that day.  Carol Ponder and Robert Kiefer, the dynamic actors who present this work, are based in Nashville, Tennessee.
