Thank You to Wayne Edwards

Thank you to Wayne Edwards for donating two vacuums to our school!  The pollen has been awful and the old vacuum was not getting the work done!  Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Forces and Motion Lesson

Mrs. Chaisson's fifth grade class has been learning about forces and motion and participated in an egg drop experiment today to apply their knowledge. The students thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor classroom setting and applying their studies to a hands on learning experiment.

Peter Rabbit

The Pre-K and Kindergarten classes had a surprise guest during their Easter egg hunt this morning - THE EASTER BUNNY!  All the children were thrilled to see him and the sweet treats he brought for everyone. Before the hunt, the students had classroom parties with Easter snacks and songs!

"Swamped"

The spring music program presented by first through third graders this morning was marvelous.  All of the spring creatures sang their hearts out and were so animated in their choreography.  Great job students, teachers, and Mrs. Nicholson.

The Greenwood Genetics Center brought their mobile lab to campus today and four classes participated in lab exercises. Mrs. Martin's anatomy class learned more about Mad Cow disease and tested samples of cattle feed for presence of prions.Mrs. Bailey's science students worked with DNA and blood typing.

The Billy Ladd Field

The Richard Winn baseball field will forever be known as the Billy Ladd Field.  The field was dedicated today in honor of Coach Ladd's faithfulness and commitment to the baseball program at Richard Winn.  What an astonishing posthumous honor that has been bestowed upon this coach's great name.

Thank You Mr. Smith!

A big shout out to Mr. Chris Smith for his expertise and labor today.  Mr. Chris made several repairs around the school on his day off and for that we are thankful!  Thank you!!

Greenwood Genetic Lab

Coming to RW 7th grade, Biology, and Anatomy Students Tuesday

The Gene Machine Mobile Science Laboratory allows the technology and expertise of the Greenwood Genetic Center to come directly to the classroom. With the support of a grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute, GGC acquired the Gene Machine, a 41 foot custom coach equipped as a mobile science laboratory. The mobile laboratory allows students to engage in fun, entertaining and educational scenarios where they have the opportunity to learn about genetic traits and disorders, understand the lab techniques used in making a diagnosis as well as consider the ethical implications of testing. Teachers can select from multiple lab activities including basic lab skills and genetic modules. Each of the modules addresses STEM initiatives and Next-Generation Science Standards. (http://www.ggc.org/education/programs/outreach/mobile-lab.html)

Students must have a signed permission slip!  Please check with your student or print from RenWeb resources tab or one HERE!

Support Pitt Hopkins

Pitt Hopkin's is a rare disorder that touches home to many of us.  Jonathan Ackerman was diagnosed at a younger age with Pitt Hopkins and so many of his family and friends have given to different causes to help further research for this disease.

Such an event to raise awareness is Jonathan's 5K.  Annie Grace Whitfield is a senior at Blythewood High School, and she has chosen this disease to focus her senior project.  Thus, she has organized a 5K to fulfill the requirements of her assignment.

Our Richard Winn student government is encouraging anyone interested in supporting Jonathan and his family to join in the walk on April 9th.  More info about registering for the event can be found by clicking the link above.  The registration deadline is April 1, 2016.

A Winnsboro Pitt Crew tee shirt has been designed and is available for purchased at Custom Ink.
(https://www.customink.com/g/dsy0-00ag-2yqn).  The tee shirt order deadline is March 22, 2016. There will not be any extra tee shirts and the deadline will not be extended.

Join us for a 5K Race/Walk in honor of Jonathan Ackerman and to benefit the Pitt Hopkins Research Foundation.

The Best of the West

Mrs. Poland's and Mrs. Taylor's kindergarten classes were visited today by professional IPRA cowboy Coy Wilson. The students' curriculum was teaching them about the wild west, and he taught them how cowboys rope calves.
Each student took a few swings and tried to catch the bale of hay that they were pretending was a calf that needed saving on the open prairie. After using his lariat, the kindergartners showed him the ones that they had made in class out of string and paper plates!

NO SCHOOL THURSDAY OR FRIDAY!

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

All four ball teams travelled to Johnston today to play against the Patriots of Wardlaw Academy.  The middle school teams came up short, but the varsity teams had the sweet taste of victory as they played their first road games.

The softball team won 14-7 thanks to a seventh inning batting streak.  The Eagles led most of the game but found themselves trailing 6-7 in the bottom of the fifth.  A. Atkerson hit a single in the top of the sixth and added two RBI's to make the score 8-7. G. Atkerson answered with a single and brought in sibling RBI making the score 9-7.  Russell continued the streak and added two more RBI's.  Other hitter information was not available but after six innings of play, the score was 13-7, Richard Winn.  A final run was scored in the top of the seventh with a game final score of 14-7, Eagles.  The winning pitcher was B. Taylor.

Action on the baseball diamond was a bit closer throughout the evening with a couple of steals by Lewis and Hensley to keep the score tight. C. Gilbert pitched a complete game, and the Eagles won with a final score of 6-5.  Wardlaw threatened late in the seventh inning with bases loaded and two outs, but the Eagles' defense was able to leave the Patriots stranded on bases.

Congratulations to the varsity teams! Thank you Allison Spires and Michelle Christianson for updates and pictures.

B. Taylor gives R. Simpson a pep talk before her first at bat as a varsity Lady Eagle.

Sacrifice bunt from S. Costenbader
