Another School Year Is in the Books!

The Lower School Awards presentation on Friday morning, May 22, officially brought the 2014-2015 school year to a close.

Dr. Nancy Coleman opened the event by commending all the students for their hard work throughout the school year and encouraged them all to stay focused on getting a good education. She also spoke of her appreciation for the faculty, staff, students, parents, and grandparents and thanked the group for allowing her to be a part of the Richard Winn Family these past five years. She then called each grade's teacher to come forward to make presentations.
At the appropriate time, students in grades one through six filed to special seating at the front while many were recognized for achieving Honor and Merit Roll for the year. In addition, individual awards were awarded to top students in each subject area and grade level. Teachers also recognized Good Citizenship, Perfect Attendance, Spelling Bee and Literary Meet participants, as well as other special awards.

Coach Jason Haltiwanger was the last teacher at the podium and used the opportunity following the fifth and sixth grade awards' presentations to publicly thank Dr. Coleman for her five years of humble service to the school. Needless to say, she received a standing ovation from all the students, teachers, and family members in attendance.

Rising fifth grader Rob Wilson looks on as his mom examines the contents of his end-of-the-year packet.
The ceremony was closed with prayer by Coach Haltiwanger, school was dismissed, and students and their family members scattered to begin enjoying the Memorial Day weekend and summer vacation!
Have a safe and happy summer!

Nineteen Eagles Take Flight

The nineteen members of the Richard Winn Academy Class of 2015 completed all the required course work and were awarded their high school diplomas on Thursday, May 21st. The commencement ceremony was held in the school's gym at 7:00 P.M.
All the girls, minus Creighton Ellison, gather for a Kodak moment prior to the ceremony.
Board Chairman Calvin Caldwell welcomed everyone and had a few words of wisdom to share with the soon-to-be graduates following the opening prayer given by class president Madison Spang.  Class officers Cassidy Branham, Jordan Parris, and Mac McDonald also took part in conducting different portions of the ceremony.
Hunter, Cameron, and Elijah share a funny story.
Class sponsors Wendy McDonald and Missy Taylor share this special time with their sons.

Salutatorian Emily Brigman composed and delivered the class history in the form or a creative rhyme. Special academic awards and scholarships were also on the agenda before Hannah Silvia, class valedictorian, had her time at the podium to give the keynote address.
Of course, the highlight of the event was the presentation of the diplomas. Mr. Caldwell returned to the podium to announce the names of the seniors as each one walked across the stage to receive his/her diploma or a congratulatory handshake from Dr. Nancy Coleman, Head of School. In a number of cases, the diploma was handed to an alumni family member who awarded the diploma to the senior.
The girls have some group fun!
Wyatt gives 2 thumbs up to graduation day!

As the group heads toward the gym for the processional, Conrad strikes a pose for the camera.
And Jordan makes FOUR, the last of the Parris sisters to graduate from RWA.
A special video featuring the nineteen seniors was played for the audience on a large movie screen. Following the traditional moving of the tassel, the singing of the Alma Mater, and the benediction, the junior marshals escorted the faculty/staff and graduates in the recessional. When all nineteen graduates were ushered to the back of the gym, a verbal count of 1-2-3  was heard, and the mortar boards and confetti went flying into the air in celebration of this milestone event.
Hooray! Let the celebration BEGIN!

Congratulations, Class of 2015, and welcome to the RWA Alumni Family!

Oops!

Please pardon the gibberish that appeared in your Wednesday's email inbox! The PTO Thank You was a PDF file that appears fine on the actual blogspot page but apparently does not translate the same in email format. Please find the original message below, minus the color graphics and gibberish!

THANK YOU!
Your RWA PTO board would like to thank all of our PTO members, students, faculty and staff, and RWA families and friends for the support given to our many PTO activities during the 2014-2015 school year.

There are so many of you who have supported the RWA PTO this year, and we'd like to take a moment as the school year closes to thank each of you for your support, donations, and time you've given to support the wonderful students and awesome teachers and staff who make our school such a great place to be.

You have helped make the following PTO adventures possible during this school year:

Welcome Back to School Faculty and Staff Luncheon - August 2014
Academic Banquet - August 2014
Innisbrook Wrapping Paper and Gift Sales - September 2014
Santa Shop - December 2014
World's Finest Chocolate Bar Sales - December-January 2015
RWA 49th Birthday Celebration Cupcake Day - February 2015
Chick-fil-A Days at RWA - Held throughout fall 2014 and spring 2015
Box Tops Collection Coordination - All year
iPad Drawing - February 2015
Flip Flop / Hat Day - May 2015
Teachers' Appreciation Breakfast - May 2015
Annual Field Day Events - May 2015

Without your help, donations, time, and support, these exciting events would not be possible. Not only do these PTO activities support our financial goals needed to purchase textbooks and provide the annual Senior PTO Scholarship, they also provide a great way to spend time with other RWA families while supporting and showing much deserved appreciation and recognition to the students, faculty, and staff of our great school. We are proud to share these special memories with you, and we look forward to a fantastic PTO year during our upcoming 2015-2016 school year!

Again, thank you to all the students, parents, grandparents, guardians, friends, teachers, and staff who have volunteered their time, talents, and donations throughout the year to support such a special place as Richard Winn Academy!

Thank you from your 2014-2015 PTO Board:
Catie Brigman, Keleigh Caldwell, Katie Nicholson, Tammy Ramsey, Michele Boulware, and Lou Anne Atkerson

Graduation & Lower School Awards

There are still two major events remaining that will bring the 2014-2015 school year to a close. The Commencement ceremony for the nineteen members of the RWA Class of 2015 will take place on Thursday, May 21st at 7:00 P.M. in the gym.

Then on Friday morning, May 22nd at 8:30 A.M., the Lower School Awards program will take place in the gym. Also, middle and high school students will come back to campus briefly to pick up report cards on Friday morning.

Celebrating the End in Song and Dance

Mrs. Retta Taylor's K-5 students and Mrs. Deborah Poland's pre-schoolers may be small in number and statue, but they're big in heart and voice. These kids not only entertained the audience with both sacred and secular music selections but also had a fun time doing it!

Mrs. Ellen Nicholson taught them to sing one song using sign language instead of words, and she also choreographed other songs with hand motions and dance moves.
Following the music portion of the program, Mrs. Poland and Mrs. Taylor presented the students with promotion certificates and special awards to conclude the program. It was a fabulous end to a great school year! Enjoy a fun and safe summer!

Class Group Photos

Unfortunately, there has been an unexpected delay in processing/shipping the class group photos to us from Strawbridge Studios. We got word today that they have been shipped and should arrive via FedEx truck tomorrow, May 20. However, the shipment of photos may not arrive prior to the early noon dismissal. If that's the case, your pre-paid class group photo will be given to your child's teacher to be handed out with report cards on Friday. For those of you who will not be picking up report cards or attending the Lower School Awards on Friday morning, your group photo will be held in the office until it can be picked up at a later time over the summer break. We can also see that the photo is mailed to you if it is too inconvenient to come by the school. Please send Mrs. Ladd an email (mladd@richardwinn.org) with your mailing address if you wish to receive your group photo this way.
We're sorry for the delay and inconvenience. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
