The 2015 Lady Eagles basketball team made history today! Coach Jason Haltiwanger's varsity squad not only ended with an undefeated 28-0 season and state title, but also notched their THIRD straight championship title, something no other Richard Winn athletic team has accomplished in the school's 49 year history!

Coach Halt gathers the girls at center court to pray and give thanks!
The Lady Eagles once again took control of the game from tip off to the final buzzer, outlasting, outplaying, and outscoring the Lady Raiders to earn the 59-34 victory and the 2015 SCISA A title of State Champions.

Junior Jaycie Johnson scored the team's first seven points and went on to have an outstanding offensive game with a 26 point total. Teammates Jessie Stidham and Bailey Taylor chalked up twelve points apiece, Emily Brigman added 4, Alyssa Atkerson had 3, and Kimmy Albert scored 2.

The victory was a total team effort as each player contributed time and talent throughout the season on the practice court and in game situations.

Following the A boys' game that went into 2 overtimes (Laurens beat Curtis Baptist), team and individual awards were presented, and the traditional cutting down of the net took place to officially conclude the event.
Post-game celebration outside the locker room.
Coach Jason Haltiwanger was presented with a game ball, the players and coaching staff each received their own championship medallion, and of course, the team was presented with the coveted championship trophy. In addition, Jessie Stidham and Jaycie Johnson were named to the All-Tournament team.

Lady Eagles Are Going to the 'SHIP!

Three playoff opponents to go!

The Lady Eagles will be playing for the A state championship title on Saturday after handily defeating a formidable Dorchester opponent, 53-27, in Thursday's semi-final game played at Wilson Hall School in Sumter.

The win tonight means a fourth trip to a SCISA State Championship event in as many years for Coach Jason Haltiwanger and his Lady Eagles and a chance for a three-peat championship title.

With 4 seconds left on the clock, Cassidy scores a hook shot.
The Lady Eagle players came out of the locker room pumped and on top of their usual fast-paced, aggressive style of play. RWA controlled the tip off and nailed three straight long range baskets before the Lady Raiders were able to post any points on the scoreboard.

Richard Winn's defense was outstanding as they trapped their opponents, forced turnovers, and rushed shots by the Lady Raiders.

Alyssa muscles her way in for a layup.
Jessie knocks down a 3-pointer.
Jessie Stidham and Alyssa Atkerson sparked the Lady Eagle offense with 17 points apiece. Cassidy Branham scored 6, Emily Brigman  had 5, and Jaycie Johnson and Bailey Taylor added 4 each.

RWA controlled the tempo throughout the game and cruised to their 27th straight victory to advance to the championship round on Saturday against the Lady Raiders of Holly Hill Academy. The SCISA A Girls' State Championship game will begin at 11:00 A.M. at the Sumter Civic Center in Sumter, SC.

Monday, February 23, 2015

Richard Winn Academy's varsity baseball team has their first outing on the diamond on Wednesday, February 25th when they travel to play York Prep.

Coach Al Berry's 2015 varsity squad has lots of depth and should be strong defensively. After graduating five players from the 2014 squad, the Eagles will have some holes to fill on the mound and at the plate, but early season predictions indicate that the Eagles have the potential to be a solid contender in the 2-A region.

We wish them well in their 4:00 P.M. season opener at York Prep and for a successful remainder of the season. The varsity Eagles, along with the Middle School team, will play again on Thursday as they both make the road trip to Wardlaw Academy (Johnston, SC) for the MS's season opener at 4:00 P.M. The varsity game against the Patriots will follow at 6:00 P.M. Good luck, guys!

Two Hour Delay: Tuesday, February 24th

Richard Winn Academy will operate on a 2-hour delay on Tuesday, February 24th due to inclement weather predictions for this area.

Lady Eagles Take It to the Hoop for #26

The Lady Eagles soared past the Lady Braves of Curtis Baptist, 72-35, in Sumter tonight to pick up win #26 of their undefeated season behind Jaycie Johnson's 40 point career high game total.

Other offensive sparks came from Emily Brigman with 13, Jessie Stidham recorded 11, Alyssa Atkerson had 4, and Cassidy Branham and Calee Thigpen added 2 each.

The semi-final contest will be played at 6:00 P.M. at Wilson Hall School on Thursday, Feb. 26.  The Lady Raiders of Dorchester Academy will be the opposing team.
Should the Lady Eagles continue their winning ways on Thursday evening, they will then advance to the A girls' state championship game on Saturday, Feb. 28th at 11:00 A.M. at the Sumter Civic Center in Sumter.

Curtis Baptist Closes the Door on the Eagles

The Braves of Curtis Baptist School of Augusta, GA (#2 seed in the Upper State bracket) gained possession of the opening tip off and "came out of the gate" gunning 3-pointers and forcing the Eagles into turnovers in the early stages. The Braves hit five of their nine total 3-pointers in the early minutes. Once the Eagles got their offense on track, RWA answered back with a 16-point first quarter. The second quarter was another story for the Eagle offense, however, with the Braves widening the gap, 42-23 at the half.

Cameron nails the first of his five 3-point baskets in the game.
Unfortunately, the 49-85 final score closed the proverbial door on the Eagles' 2014-2015 basketball season and ended the high school basketball careers of three seniors, Matt Taylor, Hunter Gibbons, and Cameron Cooper. Cameron finished up with 24 points in his final game in the Eagle uniform and over 1000 points in his phenomenal career.

Hunter scores in close range over his CB defender.
Matt leaps forward to make the 2-point basket.
Teammate Mitchell Gibbons scored 19 points for the Eagles tonight, and Jacob Steele, Hunter Gibbons, and Matt Taylor added 2 points apiece.

Congratulations to our Eagle team for a hard-fought season,
and thank you to Coach Pitt and all our players for representing the Blue and Gold so well all season long! Best wishes to our seniors who will be missed next season!

The round two Quarter Finals will be played again at Wilson Hall School in Sumter at 6:30 P.M. This time our girls will be competing in Gym A.
