SGA Delivers Holiday Cheer

SGA leaders prepare to deliver the "White Christmas"
items to the Council on Aging.
From a community service project to a semi-formal dance, the RWA Student Government "elves" have been hard at work ringing in the holiday season and bringing joy to others. Led by SGA sponsors Kerri Martin and Callie Sims, the student government officers and class representatives held a school-wide "White Christmas" drive and collected items for the local Council on Aging to distribute to the elderly.

Dressed in their holiday "finest," students take a break
from dancing for a group Kodak moment.
Fliers were printed and displayed, tickets were sold, invitations were extended, decorations were gathered and put in place, and the Sadie Hawkins semi-formal dance plans were underway for the December 20th event. Thanks to decorations borrowed from the Winnsboro Cotillion, the SGA group, their sponsors, and several parent "elves," the gym at the First Baptist Church was beautifully tranformed into a festive "Winter Wonderland." The high school students and their guests enjoyed a special evening of dancing and holiday spirit to kick off the Christmas Break.

Lions Invade the Eagle Nest

The Anderson Christian Lions visited the Eagle Nest on Friday, Dec. 19, and found the Eagles to be formidable opponents!

The Middle School boys' game literally went down to the wire with the score tied at 38. With about 9 seconds left in the game, RWA inbounded the ball under the Lions' basket. Point guard Zack Taylor hustled to dribble down court and just as he crossed mid-court, found teammate Hudson Wade to dish off a quick pass. Hudson, stationed above the free throw arch in 3-point range, went up to shoot while tightly guarded, and SWISH...just as the buzzer sounded. Hudson scored the winning basket and the celebration began! What a fabulous way to end the game and start off the next varsity game!
Hudson Wade releases the buzzer beater 3-point shot to lead his MS team to victory, 41-38.

The Lady Eagles soared once again, keeping their undefeated record intact while keeping the feisty Lady Lions at bay. RWA defeated  them 66-30. Junior standout Jaycie Johnson led all the scorers with 30 points. Other Lady Eagles tallying points included Jessie Stidham - 10, Emily Brigman - 7, Alyssa Atkerson - 6, Hannah Gibbons - 4, Calee Thigpen - 3, Cassidy Branham - 2, Kimmy Albert - 2, and Sally Costenbader - 2.
Senior Jessie Stidham goes up strong under the basket to score 2 of her 10 points.

While the Eagles were able to keep their game within reach, foul trouble plagued them and before  time expired, three of their players were seated on the bench with 5 fouls apiece. The Eagles played hard, but just couldn't get the point deficit closer than 9 points in the final quarter, losing 46-57. Senior standout Cameron Cooper led the charge for the Eagles while knocking down eight 3-pointers. He led all scorers with 32 points. Other Eagles contributing offensively included Mitchell Gibbons - 7, Rob O'Connor - 4, Hunter Gibbons - 2, and Cooper Swearingen - 1.
Senior Cameron Cooper nails one of five 3-point baskets in the first half of play.

The varsity Eagle teams will take a brief Christmas break before hitting the courts again on Dec. 29 and 30, at which time the RWA Booster Club will host their annual Christmas tournament. Watch for more details soon!

"Deck the Halls" with Kindergarten Music

Even though small in stature and few in number, the pre-K and kindergarten students made a BIG impact on their audience today as they sang songs of the holiday season and celebrated Christ's birth.
Fourth graders Maggie Hughes and Anna Grace Martin narrated as the young students portrayed characters of the first nativity to open the program.

Next Mrs. Nicholson and the wee singers switched gears mid-way to entertain the captive audience with secular music of the season.

"Whisper what you'll bring to me; tell me if you can."
To add to the excitement, Jolly Old Saint Nick made an appearance at the end of the program. Santa Claus even stayed long enough to hand out an early Christmas surprise to each of the good little boys and girls.

As he bid them farewell, he reminded them all to be good and that he'd be back very soon!

"Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!"

Great Stocking Stuffer Idea!

The yearbook price increases SOON! Order at school by Friday, Dec. 19, or online with the following link: http://www.jostens.com/apps/store/productBrowse/1042176/Richard-Winn-Academy/2015-Yearbook/2014081804160186370/CATALOG_SHOP/ by Dec. 31, 2014.

"It's Love and Joy and Laughter," and of course, MUSIC!

Elementary music instructor, jolly ol' "Ms. Nic" (AKA Mrs. Ellen Nicholson), directed the first through fifth grade students though another outstanding Christmas music performance today in the Fine Arts Room to a standing room only audience.

The program opened with the students singing songs of Jesus' birth while the first grade students dressed the parts and acted out the nativity scene.

The second portion of the program featured secular seasonal music with visits from Frosty the Snowman, carolers, bell ringers, shoppers rapping, country dancers, and alumni. Singing their own rendition of "The Twelve Days of Christmas," Mrs. Nicholson and the students treated the audience  to lots of festive holiday music.

Of course, no Richard Winn Christmas program would be complete without the traditional singing of "Christmas Is a Feeling" when the alumni come forward to sing along.

But hold on, the grand finale of  RWA Christmas music 2014 is yet to come! On Friday, December 19, at 9:00 A.M., the pre-K and kindergarten classes will entertain us once again with their own very special Christmas program. And who knows, maybe even Santa will make an appearance!

"Why Can't It Last All Year?"

In the words of RWA's favorite Christmas song, "Christmas Is a Feeling," we are all reminded that not only is this time of year a time of celebrating Christ's birth, but also a time of caring and sharing. The RWA Beta Club has done just that.
Thanks to many caring hearts and generous donors, the RWA Jr. and Sr. Beta Clubs were able to help First Steps of Winnsboro, Toys for Toys, and the Good Samaritan House this year with their yearly toy drive. The students and staff of Richard Winn once again proved to be thoughtful, generous, and kind with donations of items such as bicycles, dolls, games, puzzles, sports gear, trucks, etc.

It is always heartwarming to see the generosity of our Eagle families and their support of the Beta Club's two main service projects - the food drive and the toy drive. Both events have helped many enjoy a better holiday season! Thank you, RWA Family!

'Tis the Season

Come one, come all! Don't forget the 1st - 5th grade Christmas musical program tomorrow morning (12/17) at 9:00 A.M. in the Fine Arts Room. It will be another "Miss Nic" production that's guaranteed to entertain and get you in the Christmas Spirit!

Varsity Basketball Results vs. Whitmire & York Prep

Richard Winn Academy’s varsity basketball teams played two of their three games this week with Friday’s road trip to Chesnee still remaining. While the varsity girls have continued to dominate their opponents, the boys’ team has suffered defeat at the hands of two formidable opponents in Whitmire and York Prep.
Monday’s match up with Whitmire was the second meeting of these teams this season, and the results were again in favor of the Lady Eagles, 64-18. Junior Jaycie Johnson scored the game high 24 points in three quarters of action while senior teammate Jessie Stidham followed with 16 points. Bailey Taylor and Alyssa Atkerson added 7 apiece, Emily Brigman and Calee Thigpen scored 4 each, and Kimmy Albert contributed 2. Whitmire was led by Zaviea Sanders with 7 points.
Sophomore Alyssa Atkerson beats out her opponent to put up a shot attempt.

The Eagle teams returned home on Tuesday to face York Prep for the second time this season. The scoreboard reflected another commanding performance by the Lady Eagles, 62-17. Johnson and Stidham once again led the scoring with 25 and 11 points, respectively. Atkerson had 8, Thigpen 5, Cassidy Branham added 4, Brigman and Albert contributed 3 points each, Sally Costenbader added two free throws, and Hannah Gibbons had 1 free throw point.  York Prep was led by Kaitlyn Price with 8 points.
Jaycie Johnson, a junior, goes up strong over her York Prep opponent to score.
Senior Cameron Cooper and sophomore Mitchell Gibbons led the Eagle scoring on Monday in the losing effort to Whitmire, 47-78, with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Senior Blake Pauley added 11 points.  Jonathan Lewis had 3 points, and Hunter Gibbons and Rob O’Connor rounded out the tally with 2 points each.  Malik Whitner led the Wolverines with 24 points.
Sophomore Christian Christianson goes up strong to shoot over the York Prep opponent.

The Eagles returned to their home nest on Tuesday to re-match against the York Prep Patriots, this time with a full lineup in hopes of avenging their first game results when RWA played with a short roster of five due to football playoffs. However, the Patriots again proved themselves to be the better team and handed the Eagles their third loss of the season, 37-84. RWA scorers included Gibbons with 12, Cooper 10, Matt Taylor 6, Christian Christianson 4, Pauley 3, and Lewis 2. Tracus Chisholm led the Patriots with 29 points.
Mitchell Gibbons, sophomore, finds an opening in the Patriots' defense to take it to the hoop!

The boys’ 6:00 P.M. game at Chesnee HS on Friday (12/12) will “pit” the father-son Pitt coaches against each other, father Joe (RWA) against son Andy (Chesnee). This family “rivalry” will certainly add more intrigue to the game!  The Lady Eagles will put their 7-0 undefeated record to the test this Friday night when they travel to Chesnee for their tip-off following the boys’ game.

REMINDER!!

Articles in the Lost and Found bin will be donated to charity on Friday, December 12th. If your child is missing something, remind him or her to check lost and found before December 12th. If you happen to be in the building before Friday, please feel free to check through the bin to see if you recognize anything that might belong to your family.

Eagle Basketball Results vs. Cambridge & Whitmire

Three of the four Eagle teams were victorious during Monday's home basketball contests. The middle school teams hosted Cambridge Academy from Greenwood, but the RWA varsity teams matched up against Whitmire High School teams.

Hannah Gibbons eyes the basket to
shoot a free throw.
Both middle school teams chalked up victories over the Cambridge Cougars. In a fairly close contest, it was not until the final minutes of the MS girls' game that the junior Lady Eagles were able to seal their second victory, 22-15. None of the MS girls broke into double digit scoring column, but a number of players contributed points to the total. Point guard Hannah Gibbons lead the tally with 6 points.

The MS boys' team picked up their first win in two outings. Ben Lang Spittler led the junior Eagles offensively with 18 points in their 55-18 victory over the Cougars. Hudson Wade added 10 points to the total.

Jaycie Johnson shoots over the
Lady Wolverine defender.
The varsity girls wasted no time in dominating the visiting Lady Wolverines of Whitmire HS, 63-7. The Lady Eagles' press and aggressive man defense keep Whitmire challenged on offense, and their defense couldn't stop the face-paced, fast breaking, sharp shooting Lady Eagles. Jaycie Johnson led all scorers with 27 points.

The final contest of the night pitted the Eagles
Mitchell Gibbons shoots a fall away
jumper in close range.
against the Wolverines. The two teams played an evenly matched contest throughout the first half of action. However, the Whitmire team took care of business in the third quarter to take advantage of Eagle turnovers and foul trouble. The Eagles made a valiant comeback in the 4th quarter, down by 19 points at one point, to close the gap within 9. However, the surge came too little and too late as the Eagles dropped their first game of the young season, 61-70. Cameron Cooper once again led the Eagle scoring with 29, and Mitchell Gibbons contributed 18.

All four teams play at home again on Friday, December 5. The Wardlaw Patriots will be visiting the Eagle Nest with tip off of the MS girls' game set for 4:00 P.M. Come support our RWA basketball teams!

Because the extended football season claimed all but five basketball players, the Eagles' first game against York Prep counted as a scrimmage. With virtually no practice time due to the lengthy, but exciting and productive football season, the football players transitioned to the basketball court well enough to win their first two games over Lake Pointe (60-53) and Northside (74-58). Senior shooting guard Cameron Cooper led all scorers in both contests with 37 and 39 points.
